The King’s Cake
La Galette des Rois: A Delicious Tradition
-
Ah, mes amis, let me tell you about one of France's most delightful traditions! Every January, we celebrate Epiphany with the Galette des Rois, or King's Cake, a scrumptious puff pastry filled with sweet almond cream called frangipane.
But here's where the fun begins: hidden inside this golden, flaky masterpiece is a tiny treasure called a fève. Originally a fava bean, nowadays it's usually a charming little ceramic figurine. Whoever discovers the fève in their slice becomes king or queen for the day and gets to wear a paper crown! It's said to bring good luck and honors the Three Wise Men who visited baby Jesus.
The tradition often involves the youngest child crawling under the table to call out which guest receives each slice, ensuring no peeking or cheating! And in a lovely gesture of generosity, families traditionally set aside "la part du pauvre," an extra slice for an unexpected visitor or someone in need.
We enjoy this treat from Epiphany all the way through Mardi Gras, making it a wonderful reason to gather with friends and family during the winter months. So come join us for our celebration, and perhaps you'll be the one wearing the crown!
